A Comment on Budget Transfers

There are a huge range of prices for something as straight forward as a video transfer. Amidst the confusion, this is a real case of getting what you pay for.

Take a look at how these budget transfers can work.

JRS Editing

Check footage capture matches audio/video content of original tape

Scan through capture to remove unwanted footage, even if it is only a second or two of missing footage (bluescreen or interference) between shots (especially on VHS)

Chapters are manually chosen to be in the best possible place

I will contact you if I require more information for the titles, e.g. names, locations, dates etc.

Add custom built titles to the main event using carefully selected backgrounds which may be motion footage or photos grabbed from your footage

Add custom built menus and sub-menus with motion backgrounds, and motion thumbnails to clearly demonstrate which part of the film you are looking at. Name each chapter carefully to further aid navigation.

Images are grabbed from the footage and the best ones are carefully selected to illustrate your DVD and it’s box.

Audio/Video is burnt onto Taiyo Yuden high quality CDs/DVDs and Fuji miniDV tapes, which are widely considered the most reliable medium.

Your selected image is sized and enhanced for printing directly onto the DVD surface.

All menu functions are double-checked both on my Mac/PC and on a DVD player. I have never had a CD/DVD returned as unplayable.

Any DVD can be packaged in a high quality Amaray DVD case with insert.

Unlikely it will be checked for consistency as this adds significant time to project

Unlikely this is done as, again, this adds a lot of time to the job.

The software used automatically adds chapters every 5/10 minutes. This means that the chapters could start right in the middle of something interesting or even just after the event

There simply is not enough money in the project to support this kind of customer care.

Titles are usually extra cost. Otherwise a standard title with standard text is used

Single, standard menu is added (if at all) which will have static thumbnails (if at all) and just chapter headings, e.g. chapter 1, chapter 2....

A standard image is used.

Cheap bulk-buy CDs/DVDs are used that can become corrupted after a few years, or even months in some cases.

A stick on label is added to the CD/DVD with a standard image. It is possible that the glue used in these labels could slowly corrode the surface of the CD/DVD. The labels can also tear or be out of balance which could severely damage your DVD player and the disc.

The DVD may be checked on a standard DVD player but, more often than not, it is not checked.

DVD case is cheap bulk buy.
